The influence of graffiti remains unmistakable. Spray paint, expressive outlines, and techniques developed through decades of painting walls continue to define both the visual language and the creative process.
Lostangelz.nl has been active in the graffiti scene since 1986. What began as a fascination with traditional New York graffiti lettering gradually evolved into a broader exploration of abstraction, while remaining firmly rooted in the visual language of graffiti. Around 2010, the focus expanded from large-scale murals to canvas, creating new opportunities to experiment with composition, layering, and form. Although letters remain central to the work, they no longer function primarily as a means of displaying a name. Instead, they serve as structural elements that shape abstract compositions, allowing the artworks to exist between typography and abstraction and inviting multiple interpretations.
Rather than abandoning graffiti, the work represents an ongoing translation of its principles into a different context, where traditional lettering and abstract experimentation merge into a personal visual vocabulary.
Alongside his autonomous artistic practice, Lostangelz.nl has worked as a graphic designer for more than 25 years. This professional background has subtly influenced the work through an appreciation for typography, composition, and visual balance, while the freedom of painting provides a deliberate contrast to the structured environment of commercial design.
